Message from the Director General
The year 2016 has been full of productive activities in the area of Building Library Resources, Library services, Book collection, cultural events for the benefit and awareness of the users. Throughout the year many trainings were organized for the Users awareness of E-Resources available in the Library and workshops were held for providing hands on trainings to the Library professionals.
In its new initiative, the National library has started an internship scheme which seeks to provide a scope of experimental learning to pre-professionals in the concerned field, which could be beneficial for the National Library in respect of backlog clearance. During the year 2016, 17 interns have started working in the Library.
The year 2016 laid a grand landmark in the area of cultural exchange and building relations with other countries. National Library of India has Memorandum of Understanding with the libraries of other 20 countries under Cultural exchange programme. Article 1(2) of the signed Protocol of the 21st meeting of the India-Russia Joint working Group on Culture and Tourism noted that under the existing bilateral Cultural exchange programme (CEP), an Indian Rare book exhibition by National Library of India, Kolkata and a Russian Rare book exhibition by Russian State Library, Moscow would need to be organized in Moscow and India respectively. Given the importance of the bilateral cultural cooperation especially with regard to library exchanges. It was recommended that a Rare book exhibition will be organized by National Library of India, Kolkata in Moscow at Russian State Library, and the exhibition was inaugurated on 2nd sept 2016 at the oriental centre by Dr. JEYSUNDAR D. DIRECTOR, Jawahar Lal Nehru cultural centre, Embassy of India, Moscow.
Another very important event held on 4th November 2016, as a Vietnam corner was inaugurated at the Bhasha Bhavan, second floor opposite Indian Writers Gallery by Mr. Tran Quang Tuyen, Minister, Vietnam Embassy in India the Vietnam Solidarity committee in collaboration with Vietnam Embassy in India. A Seminar was held on India-Vietnam Relations : Glorious Past Nurturing Golden Future on the occasion.
Ek kadam swacchta ki aur as per the mandate of P.M. Office Swacch Bharat mission was observed in the Library on 28th September 2016 where all the Officers, Staff and outsource workers joined in the campaign to keep National Library campus clean.
The objectives of the National library are to provide cultural, literary and educational activities, geared towards the general public as well as specific audiences, including students, scholars and Librarians; To maintain professional ties with National libraries, public libraries and archives as well as cultural and educational institutions and to maintain and operate an infrastructure that allows, among other things, suitable study, documentation, storage, preservation, presentation and research conditions. The Library continues to function to fulfill these objectives as will be evident from the following pages.
